Last Minute Food Gifts

Food makes a perfect gift.  Not only do we need food for nutrition and nourishment, but it’s something everyone generally enjoys. Gifts of food – and beverages – can be complex, but they don’t have to be. Food can be made or purchased and there’s a great variety so you will be able to find something for everyone, whether it’s friends, family, neighbours, colleagues or hosts.

Make it or fake it

Few gifts are better than those that are homemade. Sweet or savoury? Both are delicious.

Whether it’s been passed down through the generations, or is a new favourite, attach the recipe so recipients can make it again and pass it on.

If you’re short on time or not as handy in the kitchen, dress something up. Melt chocolate and dip and decorate premade shortbread cookies. Wrap up a cake mix and attach sprinkles and other ornaments. Infuse sugar with vanilla beans, rose petals or orange and lemon peel for a fragrant addition to beverages and desserts. Apply the same principle to vodka for those who enjoy entertaining.

No matter what the product, dress it up in fancy or found jars and tins.

It’s in the bag, basket or jar

Another easy gift is to pair a combination of items that go together. Gift your favourite oil and vinegar – which are expanding into new flavours and styles. There are hot sauces, salsas and spreads to try – just add chips or crackers – or a basket of cheeses and charcuterie items.

Create a package around a theme. Make breakfasts bright with a baguette, jam and a knife. Combine microwave popcorn, seasonings, candy and drinks in a bowl for a movie night.

There’s no limit to foods fit for a jar either. Prepare a mix of dry ingredients – for pancakes, cookies, hot chocolate, soup or s’mores – and attach the recipe.

There really is something for everyone when it comes to gifts of food and drink. Gifts can be traditional or adventurous. With the increased focus on food innovation and exploration in recent years, there’s always something new to try. So the hardest part about food gifts becomes picking only one.
