‘Canapé’ sounds fancy, but it’s just a bite-sized piece of bread with a filling or topping. It can be as simple as a cracker, cream cheese and pickle. Or it can be much more — and you can use whatever you have on hand.

Get started with these combinations:
- Baguette slices with pâté and honey mustard
- Pita cracker with hummus, jarred roasted pepper and a spicy pickle
- Mini naan with cooked ground or chopped chicken tossed with butter sauce and topped with a thin wedge of paneer
- Butter crackers with a slice of provolone and antipasto
- Scoop-shaped nachos filled with a mixture of salsa, shredded cheese and black beans

‘Crudité’ is another way to say veggies and dip. Try these tips for creative crudités:
- Choose a variety of colours. Multi-colour carrots, broccoli or cauliflower, snap peas and yellow peppers will create a rainbow of flavour.
- Use what’s in season. In winter, don’t be afraid to substitute steamed veggies like potatoes, broccoli, green beans or pickled veggies such as beans, asparagus or carrots.
- Add other stick-shaped items: salami sticks, cheese sticks or bread sticks.
- Tip: wrap salami around cheese and bread sticks as part of your display!
- Select dips with different bases: cream-based, tomato-based, oil and vinegar-based. A warm cheese dip is always welcome. Use a votive-heated fondue pot to keep it warm.
