What’s your berry favourite memory? Some people remember eating sun-ripened raspberries straight from the shrub in the backyard. Many of us picked pails of saskatoons for Baba to bake into a pie. Others remember lazy Sunday drives to the u-pick field to collect sweet strawberries for making enough jam to last the winter.
With Co-op Gold Pure No-Sugar-Added Fruit Spreads, we’re excited to share the homemade taste of preserves made of produce from the backyard – just like you remember.
The fruit spreads are available in four flavours: Strawberry-Rhubarb, Saskatoon, Raspberry or Haskap-Blueberry. They’re fruit-forward, with twice the fruit compared to regular jam, and they don’t contain added sugar. Instead, apple concentrate is the sweetener.
“With these spreads, we wanted the full flavour of the fruit to shine through,” said Sav Bellissimo, Store Brands Manager at Federated Co-operatives Limited. “That’s why we opted for apple juice instead of sugar – we wanted to get as much sweetness as possible from the fruit.”
The spreads were developed in collaboration between Federated Co-operatives Limited, the Saskatchewan Food Industry Development Centre and growers from across Western Canada. In fact, all of the produce used to make the spreads is grown in Western Canada, including:
- Saskatoons, which are native to Western Canada and rich in fiber, micronutrients and antioxidants. Co-op’s supplier, Prairie Berries in Keeler, Sask., was founded in 1993 with the goal of introducing saskatoon berries to the world.
- Haskaps, which are native to boreal forests in Asia, Europe and North America and have a unique flavour reminiscent of blueberries and raspberries. North 49 Fruit Corp. in Alberta supplies these delicious berries.
- Rhubarb, a tart perennial plant (it’s actually a vegetable!) which can be used to make pies, cakes, crumbles, jams and much more. Prairie Fresh Food Corporation in Saskatoon specializes in seasonal fresh produce, including the rhubarb for our spreads.
