A Western Spin on a Mediterranean Classic

Quite common in Middle Eastern and Mediterranean diets, hummus is becoming more and more popular in Western Canada. And why not? After all, not only is it an excellent source of fibre and protein, but it’s also delicious and versatile! Try it as:

  • A dip for veggie sticks or pita crackers
  • A spread in a fresh veggie sandwich
  • The foundation for a 7-Layer Greek Dip (topped with tzatziki, red onion, cucumber, tomatoes, feta and black olives)
  • A condiment for our Marinated Chicken Sheet Pan Meal, or
  • Seasoning when spread over salmon before baking.

The perfect hummus to use for any of these ideas is CO-OP GOLD PURE Hummus, which we have made in Saskatchewan with locally sourced chickpeas.

“We couldn’t find a Western Canadian source for hummus and thought it was an important factor since the main ingredient is chickpeas that are grown right here in the prairies,” said Sav Bellissimo, Store Brands Manager at Federated Co-operatives Limited. “A couple of years back, we were sourcing our hummus from a company in Eastern Canada who was using Western Canadian chickpeas and thought that was wasteful, so that is how the journey began.”

With a creamy texture and just the right squeeze of lemon, this preservative-free hummus is as close to homemade as you can get. Choose from four flavours: Original, Mellow Roasted Garlic, Garlic and Dill, or Roasted Red Pepper. Stop by your local Co-op Food Store to find your new favourite!
